Layeri – custom keyboard

TL;DR:

  • handwired with a Pro Micro
  • hotswapable
  • custom 40% ortholinear layout
  • custom layered frosted acrylic case (3mm layers)
  • GMK Set compability
  • build with Gateron Yellow KS-3 lubed and filmed
  • plate mounted stabs

When I finished the Nori project, it was clear for me to go to the next level as soon as possible.

The next level for me was to create a custom ortholinear keyboard, handwired, hotswapable, GMK Set compatible and in a custom case.

As custom case, there where many different option. But as I wanted to start “easy”, I decided to start with a layered frosted acrylic case.

With some help from the community and after some iterations, i finally managed to create the case. While the first plate had to much room, no possibility to let the switches click in, the second iteration had fixed these issues. Also I built the first iteration with a wrong stab size which needed to be fixed.

Also I learned that I should think about the controller position during the case creation. I managed to cut out the case a bit to be able to directly have the controller available to the outside of the case as I didn’t want to use a breakout board.

RGB all around 🙂

Some final ToDos:

  • removing one layer from the top. Therefore I need to wait for the correct sized standoffs.
  • fix one key which touches the case
  • replace screws by some blue anodized ones
  • check QMK fork with openrgb = would that be a cool addon?
  • How complex is a port to VIA?
  • disable Pro Micro red power LED
